Biohub's Virtual Biology Initiative to generate biology data

Tracks Biohub's Virtual Biology Initiative (VBI), the open effort to generate data for predictive models of cells and disease, including its launch, its later expansion with partners, and how researchers describe what it is meant to unlock. It does not cover general discussion of AlphaFold or protein-folding.

Overview

Biohub's Virtual Biology Initiative is an effort to work out and generate the data needed to build predictive biological models. In a Latent Space panel published on 10 October 2026, Biohub's Sal Candido presented it as data-first and open to the community. Google DeepMind's Pushmeet Kohli called the effort announced that day extremely important. The panel did not name the announcement or give funding figures.

In Moonshots EP #302, Peter Diamandis identified the 7 October announcement as a $1.8 billion expansion. His breakdown was $500 million from Biohub, $500 million from the Department of Energy through the Genesis Mission, $500 million of NIH data sets, and $300 million from Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs. Biohub's own announcement says the NIH part is datasets built from earlier federal investment, and that Meta is also among the $300 million contributors, which Diamandis did not mention. The goal discussed is a universal virtual cell that predicts responses to drugs, gene therapy and disease.

Alexander Wissner-Gross forecast that in-silico small-molecule candidates for the top 5,000 diseases could appear within two to three years, with regulation a separate policy question. That is a prediction, not a result.

Dates show when each podcast discussion was published.

  1. New information

On Moonshots EP #302, Diamandis described the 7 October $1.8 billion VBI expansion and its funding split, and the goal of a universal virtual cell. Wissner-Gross predicted in-silico drug candidates for the top 5,000 diseases within two to three years; this is a forecast.

  2. New information

On this Latent Space panel, Sal Candido of Biohub presented the VBI as a data-first effort. It asks what data is needed to solve the problem and works openly with the community to find the scaling law. Pushmeet Kohli of Google DeepMind called the effort announced that day extremely important, saying that drug-discovery acceleration depends on better biological models than exist now. The speakers did not name the announcement or give funding figures, so which Biohub announcement they meant is not established by the panel itself.
